How Laundry Business Owners Can Stay Sane During the Year-end Rush

Holiday travel, balik kampung, family gatherings, school holidays, rainy weather and end-of-year cleaning can all mean more laundry and more customers. It’s good for your laundry business but it can also drive you up the wall. Here are 7 ways to make the extra business without burning yourself out.

Pre-rush prep

The best way to reduce peak-season stress is to prepare for problems before they happen. Inspect and clean all washing machines and dryers. Service those showing signs of potential problems. Check all payment systems, water pressure, CCTV and lighting. Stock up on cleaning supplies and commonly needed spare parts.

Delegation is key

Don’t try to do everything yourself. You may think it’ll be faster if you just did it yourself. But doing everything yourself for several weeks can quickly lead to exhaustion. Let your staff take over non-critical tasks such as shop cleaning, basic customer assistance, and checking detergent supplies. Do the things that require your decision-making. Delegate the rest.

Shop reset

During peak periods, cleanliness can deteriorate quickly. You want to maintain a clean environment with short, frequent 5-minute cleaning and reset every 1-2 hours. This could include clearing abandoned laundry, wiping folding tables, mopping up spills, and refilling essentials. That way, customers are always in a clean, well-managed laundromat even when business is hectic.

Clear instructions and protocol

You want to ensure good flow and customer experience even during peak period. Improve signage for machine operation, payment systems, and recommended load sizes. Display clear steps for customers on what to do if a machine breaks down. List contact information to report problems. Clear communication prevents frustration.

Queue management

Peak periods can create congestion around dryers and folding tables. Customers get frustrated when they don’t know how long is the wait, if the machine is available, or whether they should come back later. Inform them with clear signage such as ‘Expected waiting time: xx minutes’. Encourage them to return during non-peak hours. If your system allows remote monitoring, use it to identify peak periods and share this info with your customers through social media.

Protect your own body

During peak season, you’re probably spending long hours standing, walking, lifting and moving things around, and cleaning. This could lead to exhaustion and even injury if you’re not careful. Use a trolley for heavy loads, wear comfortable, supportive footwear, take short breaks, and don’t skip meals.

Take care of your mental state

Schedule off-duty hours for yourself. This could mean one proper meal break, one fixed evening cut-off, or one half-day off each week. Not every problem needs your immediate attention. Decide which categories are urgent such as machine breakdown or payment failure. Put another person in charge when you’re away. Peak revenue shouldn’t come at the expense of your health and family time.
