In part 1&2 of this series, we discussed the pros and cons of the independent and franchise laundry business models in Malaysia. Now that you have the facts for both models, you can decide which one suits you better based on these 5 questions:

What is your budget?

Both models require investing in renovations and equipment, but the initial start-up cost for an independent laundromat will be lower compared to a franchise. This is due to the franchise fees which can go up to RM500,000 or more.

Do you want full control?

Franchisees need to follow the SOPs set by the franchisors. This will include their logo and store design, branding, equipment selection, and suppliers. You also have no autonomy in setting the prices and services. If you prefer to maintain creative control over your laundry business, start your own laundromat.

Are you confident in operations & marketing?

As an independent laundry business owner, you will need to handle equipment sourcing, layout planning, marketing, hiring, pricing, and customer service all on your own. This may work for someone who already has the relevant experience. On the other hand, a franchisee gets training, supplier contacts, and marketing materials. The system is proven, and you are less likely to fail.

Do you have a specific location in mind?

Franchisors may restrict locations to avoid competition among branches. If you want the freedom to choose where you want to open your laundry business, buying a franchise may not be the right fit for you.

What is your long-term goal?

If you have the ambition and vision to build your own laundry brand, expand how you want, and even franchise your own business one day, you have to start from scratch.  A franchise would be a better choice if you just want a way to earn a steady, proven income with less trial and error.
