10 Tips to Shop for Grocery Safely During Covid-19

After the Covid-19 pandemic, grocery shopping is never the same again. If you are overwhelmed by the dangers of shopping for grocery, here are 10 top tips to help you minimise your infection risk:

  1. Shop online

Using online grocery shopping and delivery services to minimise contact with shoppers at the stores.

  1. Plan your shopping trip

If you can’t shop online, try to get enough food to last for at least a week to reduce the times you need to go to the store. For the elderly or high-risk groups, you should shop during designated hours at some stores or you could shop during off-peak hours to avoid crowds.

  1. Choose the store

Shop at a store that is implementing precautionary steps including temperature checks at entrances, wiping down carts for customers and limiting the number of customers in the store at a time.

  1. Shopping essentials

It is recommended that you wear a mask and gloves to go grocery shopping. Disinfectant wipes and hand sanitisers are useful too. Remember not to touch your eyes and face throughout the shopping trip.

  1. Social distancing at the store

When you are in the store, try to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other shoppers. Avoid a crowded aisle. Be patient.

  1. Touching items

Clean the handles of shopping carts or baskets with disinfectant wipes. Use a paper shopping list instead of your phone to prevent transferring the virus to your phone. Discard the list after shopping.

  1. Paying safely

If you have an option, go cashless. When using a credit or debit card, remember to wipe clean both sides of the card after use. Try to keep as much distance as possible between yourself and the cashier. Use self-service checkout if available.

  1. Leaving the store

Use the hand sanitiser the moment you leave the store especially before you get in the car and touch the steering wheel.

  1. Unloading your groceries

Put your grocery bags on the floor, then wash your hands thoroughly. Wipe down all your grocery items with disinfectant wipes or spray. Leave the items to dry. For non-perishable goods, you can let them sit out for 72 hours instead of wiping them down. Wash the fruits and vegetables like you normally would.

  1. Cleaning up

Once you’ve unpacked your groceries, you should wash your hands again. Then clean your kitchen surfaces including counter tops, cabinet handles and light switches. Taking a bathe after that wouldn’t hurt too.
